Back in the day, body piercing used to be for the fringe. It was something a young, rebellious teenager did. Like a daring show to express their independence and right to make their own choices without having to ask permission.

Today, tattoos and body piercing are seen on every type of individual. Piercing body parts has become just like wearing earrings.

As children, even babies, parents chose to get their little girl’s ears pierced. They didn’t ask us if we wanted it done. Some parents waited until their daughters were old enough to ask for it or discuss it. If they waited, it was usually gifted for a birthday or good grades as the cost of gold earrings was just that, a cost in addition to the piercing procedure.

It was necessary or at least recommended that solid gold studs be used so the pierced holes healed quickly and correctly. Once the piercings were healed, you could change earrings to anything you liked. If you had a reaction to the new earrings, it was understood that you either had an allergic reaction to the material of the jewelry or got an infection from something getting in there. At that point, the earring would be removed and the original gold posts would go back in and the area would be treated with rubbing alcohol until the area healed again.
